Fall in Tokyo is simply stunning. All of the beautiful parks and gardens in Tokyo suddenly become breath-taking koyo (fall foliage) spots. Fall is definitely my favourite season in Tokyo and the best time to visit Japan. For 2019, the best fall foliage viewing period will be from November to early December. The fall foliage season is coming soon in Tokyo, so it better not catch you off-guard. Here are my favourite photo spots in Tokyo for fall foliage:
1. Rikugien Garden
Rikugien Garden is probably one of the most popular fall foliage spots in Tokyo. The garden’s colorful trees and picturesque bridges will take you back to the old Edo times. Rikugien Garden is beautiful to visit both during the day and during the evening, when there are illuminations.
2. Shinjuku Gyoen
Shinjuku Gyoen is a beautiful location to visit in every season. However, it is especially beautiful during the fall foliage season in Tokyo, when most trees become colored in red.
3. Yasukuni Jinja Shrine
Yasukuni Jinja Shrine is not as popular as Rikugien Garden and Shinjuku Gyoen, but it is definitely a better alternative to avoid the crowds during the fall foliage season. In autumn, Yasukuni Shrine is surrounded by tall, golden ginkgo trees. My favourite spot for photo shooting is the Sacred Pond Garden, right next to the shrine. If you are looking for the best spots for portraits in autumn colors in Tokyo, this is my top recommendation.
Here are some fall portraits I took in collaboration with Alan at Yasukuni Shrine ( see his work here).
These beautiful portraits were taken at the Sacred Pond Garden. I love the autumn colors in the background thanks to the foliage!
I think Yaskuni Shrine is a great photo spot for fashionable portraits even outside of the fall season as well. The garden’s beautiful scenery features a waterfall, a tea house and a pond with koi fish.
I hope you liked my recommendations for best photo spots for autumn colors in Tokyo 2019. Enjoy the autumn views!
